This is how to add chapters to your YouTube videos. This is the sections that you see on the play bar of a video. It makes it easier for viewers to navigate to the section of the video they're most interested in!
The details for your chapters go on the description section of your video. The following steps can be done both before posting and after.
Find the 'description' of your video. This is what you will be editing.
When posting a video you can add the chapters into the description. They will appear once you finish uploading your video.
If you have already published your video, head to YouTube studio and click edit. You can then follow the next steps.
In the description, add the timestamps for each chapter followed by the title you would like to give it.
The timestamp is the time in MM:SS or HH:MM:SS that your chapter STARTS. The chapter will end when the next chapter starts.
The first timestamp HAS TO BE 0:00 !!
It should look something like this:
And that is it! Super simple!
FAQ
Do I need to start with 0:00?
Yes!! That way YouTube can recognise that you're adding chapters. And where it starts.
Why are my timestamps and titles not appearing clickable? It's just normal text rather than the blue highlighted text I see in other videos?
The chapters look like any other text in your description. Only when you are watching the video will you see it as linked and clickable. So do not worry if it doesn't look right!
Do I need to put the chapters in a specific location in the description? Do the timestamps need to go at the top or bottom?
No! They can go anywhere in your description. You can have other text before and after. Just make sure the timestamps are all together. But that's it.
