How to add subtitles to your YouTube video (tutorial with photos)
Adding subtitles to your YouTube videos is easy and you can do it either before or after publishing the video. It’s a great way of making your videos more accessible.
This is how to add subtitles to your YouTube video. Watch the video below for a step-by-step instructions or scroll down to read.
In the 'Content' tab, choose the video you’d like to add subtitles to. If it’s not there yet, upload your video now!
Step 2 - Adding Subtitles
There are a few ways to go about this!
Option 1 - using YouTube’s automatically generated subtitles
When you’re in your selected video in YouTube Studio, click on the “Subtitles” tab
You’ll see that YouTube has already automatically created subtitles for you!
Note: if you have just uploaded your video, YouTube can take some time to generate subtitles.
YouTube doesn’t always get the right words, so if you’d like to fix the subtitles, select “Duplicate and edit”
Edit the automatically generated text OR delete all text and write from scratch
Option 2 - upload file
From the Subtitles Tab of your selected video, click “Add Language”
Choose the language your subtitles will be in
Click the “add” button in the row you’ve just added
Upload a file from your computer. The subtitle file would be created from a separate program (outside of YouTube) and should contain text of what’s said in the video, and may also include time codes. Make sure that YouTube supports your file format.
Step 3 - Publishing the Subtitles
Woohoo! You’ve made it to the last step! Regardless of how you’ve edited or written your subtitles, all you need to do now is click “Publish”.
Go watch your YouTube video to check it’s live and fully captioned 🙂
